Sameer Sarkar, of Henrico, is one of only six high school seniors in Virginia to be chosen a 2012 Presidential Scholar. One of the nation's top highest honors for high school students, the Presidential Scholar award is bestowed annually based on academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, and evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Sarkar will join two classmates from the Maggie Walker Governor’s School (Bethany Bruno of Powhatan and Judy Hou of Chesterfield) to receive the Presidential Scholar Medallion at a June 16 ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Margaret Thomas and William Thompson, of Richmond, recently were named to the honor roll for the winter 2012 term at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. To be eligible for the honor roll, students must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.75.

The following students recently were named to the dean’s list for the winter 2012 term at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.: Shannon Cusack, of Glen Allen; and Paige Gay, Ann Moore, Carleton Rawles, Mary Robertson and Anne Watlington. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.4.

Comcast’s annual Leaders and Achievers® program recently awarded college scholarships to 53 Virginia high school students, including four students from Henrico County: Adam Johnson, Varina High School; Christine Maina, Freeman High School; Garrett Parrilla, Hermitage High School; and Bhumi Patel, Tucker High School. Each student received $1,000. A total of $62,000 in scholarships has been awarded to Virginia high school seniors this year. During the awards ceremony, a prize drawing was held and Freeman student Christine Maina was one of three students who won iPads.

Rachel M. Haines, of Glen Allen, recently received the Richard and Elaine Blouse Scholarship at Millersville University of Pennsylvania in Millersville, Pa.

Celeste Martin, of Richmond, recently graduated from Concordia University in Portland, Ore. Martin received a master of education degree in educational leadership.
