Becky Bell, a local volunteer coordinator with the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), recently received the organization’s Local Coordinator of the Year award. Bell, who has been involved with CIEE’s high school exchange program for 10 years, helps find good host and/or welcome families for high school exchange students in metro Richmond, including Henrico. Jeremy Drummond, professor of studio art at the University of Richmond, recently was awarded the Mednick Memorial Fellowship by the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC). The fellowship will support “Nothing, Still Nothing,” Drummond’s audio-video project that critically examines relationships between human creativity, sensory deprivation and solitary confinement. Drummond has taught at the University of Richmond since 2005 and has received several awards and fellowships. His video and photo-based work has been exhibited in festivals, galleries, and museums worldwide and is held in many public and private collections.

Stephen E. Baril, a business litigation attorney in the Business and Professional Litigation group at the Sands Anderson law firm, recently was appointed to the J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Board by the City of Richmond. Baril concentrates his law practice on complex business litigation, business disputes and trial strategy. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Greater Richmond Partnership, the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, Richmond's Future and in the leadership of the Forum Club and Venture Richmond. Baril earned his law degree at the University of Richmond School of Law and his bachelor's at Hampden Sydney College.

The following students recently were elected to the Student Court at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Va.: Peter Van Alstyne Howard – son of Ms. Christine Moran, of Henrico, and graduate of The Steward School; Brandon A. Long – son of Anthony and Kelly Long, of Glen Allen, and graduate of The Steward School; and Richard Michael Pantele – son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Pantele, of Henrico, and graduate of Mills E. Godwin High School. The students will serve for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Michael S. Quash, son of Sheila D. Quash, of Glen Allen, and Henry C. Quash, of Hanover, recently was promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Quash received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, shipboard and aircraft safety and physical fitness. Quash is a 2008 graduate of Douglas S. Freeman High School.

Raiders help ‘Stir It Up!’

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.

The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
