Milestones

The following students recently were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester at University of Mary Washington: Tawany C. Almeida, Jack K. Anderson, Mary K. Hubbard, Christopher A. Moore and Nathalie I. Rieder, of Glen Allen; LeeAnne R. Brooks, of Sandston; John L. White, of Henrico; and Nathan J. Bemis, Hallie E. Gibson, Lara R. Pugh and Amy M. Purello, of Richmond. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Elyse V. Clark, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the president’s list for the fall 2011 semester at University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. To be eligible for the president’s list, students must earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Alexandria T. Kunz, of Henrico, recently graduated from Boston University in Boston, Mass. Kunz received a master’s degree in criminal justice.

Parth P. Shah, of Glen Allen, recently was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2011 semester at Boston University in Boston, Mass.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell recently appointed the following local residents to state boards and commissions: Virginia Retirement System Board of Trustees – Diana F. Cantor, of Glen Allen, partner with Alternative Investment Management, LLC; and Virginia Wine Board – Mitzi L. Batterson, of Glen Allen, general manager of James River Cellars.

The Henricus Foundation with Chesterfield and Henrico Counties recently named Charles Lewis Grant the executive director of Henricus Historical Park. Grant served as acting executive director since July 2010 and throughout the site’s 400th commemoration. He previously served as operations manager of the living history museum for two years. Prior to Henricus Historical Park, Grant served as president of Custom Collectibles, Ltd. and senior project manager at The American Historical Foundation. Grant has undergraduate and master’s degrees in history from Radford University and Virginia Tech, respectively.

Alan Meekins, of Richmond, recently graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y. Meekins received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

Spirited Art Richmond held a painting class May 5 for Hanover Habitat for Humanity families to paint their own artwork as a final touch for their new homes. Among first-time homeowners painting The Klimt Circle tree (which doubles as a ‘family tree’) were (left to right) Janet Payne, Gwen Stockman of Hanover Habitat and Payne’s daughter, Ashley Payne. The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
