Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden wins national award

Among the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden volunteers, staff members, and board members celebrating today was LGBG Board of Directors President William H. King, Jr. (pictured) as officials announced that the Garden has been selected for a prestigious national award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The Institute, located in Washington, D.C., chose LGBG as one of only ten libraries and museums to receive the 2011 National Medal. The Garden joins an elite group with only two other botanical gardens in the country that have received the honor: Chicago Botanic Garden (2005) and New York Botanical Garden (2010). LGBG is also the first Virginia museum to be chosen in the history of the award.

The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries for extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions. Recipients must demonstrate innovative approaches to public service and community outreach. Nominated by U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), LGBG was selected for its Community Kitchen Garden that grows fresh produce for the needy, as well as for its education programs, urban greening and water management initiatives, and contributions to economic development and work-force training.
