Hit-and-run victim was daughter of Citizen managing editor

Public memorial service planned for Friday at 3 pm
Lanie Kruszewski
The daughter of Henrico Citizen Managing Editor Patty Kruszewski was the victim of a fatal hit-and-run incident on River Road in Richmond near the University of Richmond late Sunday night.

Lanie Kruszewski, 24, was riding her bicycle east on River Road near Bridgeway Road, when she was struck by a motorist who apparently was traveling the same direction, according to Richmond Police. She died at the scene.

Police believe the vehicle that struck Kruszewski may have been a Jeep Cherokee or Dodge Durango. It may have damage to the front passenger side area, including its headlight and side mirrors or window, police said.

Kruszweski was a 2006 graduate of the Maggie L. Walker's Governor School in Richmond and a 2011 graduate of James Madison University.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637 using the word “iTip” followed by a tip. Both options are anonymous. Tips may also be made to the Richmond Police Hit and Run Unit by calling (804) 646-1369.

A public memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3, in the the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School commons.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Kruszewski's name to:

the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School Foundation, which supports the school;

the Virginia Bicycling Federation, a safety and advocacy group that seeks to improve cycling conditions statewide;

Brain Food, a Washington, D.C. organization that teachers high-schoolers about food, nutrition, cooking, and jobs in the food industry.

Patty Kruszewski recently wrote a column about Title IX's 40th anniversary, in which she described a number of Lanie's experiences as a student, athlete and young adult and explained how the law helped open doors for her and millions of other young women; read it here.

A Facebook page in Lanie's memory has been established here: https://www.facebook.com/InMemoryOfLanieKruszewski.
