Henrico students compete in LifeSmarts competition at VSU

High school students from throughout Virginia – including Henrico County – will compete March 8 in a statewide LifeSmarts competition at Virginia State University.

Eight teams of students will face challenging questions about personal finance, health and safety, consumer awareness, and home energy use. Student teams will represent Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond, George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Spotsylvania and Chancellor and High Schools in Spotsylvania County, and 4-H programs in Henrico County and Franklin County, Va.

The winning team will compete in the National LifeSmarts Championship in Atlanta, Ga., April 20 – 23.

Cherry Hedges, financial education director for Virginia Credit Union, is the chair of LifeSmarts this year.

“LifeSmarts is built on the premise that knowledge is power. With hours of practice, the high school students who compete in LifeSmarts are extremely well-informed consumers. They are well-prepared to make decisions with their money and other resources as they enter college and careers.”

Each LifeSmarts competition requires large numbers of adult volunteers who serve as quizmasters, time keepers and judges. The March 8 competition includes volunteers from the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Housing Opportunities Made Equal, the Virginia Department of Education, the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia, Virginia State University, the Virginia Credit Union League and Virginia Credit Union.

Anthem LemonAid registration opens


Every week, another child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia. Last summer, six-year-old Caroline Morris was one of them.

Diagnosed in June 2015 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, Morris has been receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) ever since.

Richmond Solar Co-op sign ups end April 30


The sign up period for the Richmond Community Solar Co-op will close on April 30. Nearly 150 homeowners and businesses have joined the group to save money and make going solar easier. The group has started installations and is working with VA SUN to learn about solar technology and the process of going solar.

“If you’ve ever thought about going solar, this is a great opportunity to do so,” said Sekar Veerappan Co-op member and the group’s first installation. “Working with the group helps members learn about going solar and make an informed decision.” > Read more.
