Henrico students compete in LifeSmarts competition at VSU

High school students from throughout Virginia – including Henrico County – will compete March 8 in a statewide LifeSmarts competition at Virginia State University.

Eight teams of students will face challenging questions about personal finance, health and safety, consumer awareness, and home energy use. Student teams will represent Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond, George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Spotsylvania and Chancellor and High Schools in Spotsylvania County, and 4-H programs in Henrico County and Franklin County, Va.

The winning team will compete in the National LifeSmarts Championship in Atlanta, Ga., April 20 – 23.

Cherry Hedges, financial education director for Virginia Credit Union, is the chair of LifeSmarts this year.

“LifeSmarts is built on the premise that knowledge is power. With hours of practice, the high school students who compete in LifeSmarts are extremely well-informed consumers. They are well-prepared to make decisions with their money and other resources as they enter college and careers.”

Each LifeSmarts competition requires large numbers of adult volunteers who serve as quizmasters, time keepers and judges. The March 8 competition includes volunteers from the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Housing Opportunities Made Equal, the Virginia Department of Education, the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia, Virginia State University, the Virginia Credit Union League and Virginia Credit Union.
