Henrico student helps Dominion promote ‘Project Plant It!’
|
Alexis Kirby, a third-grader at Colonial Trail Elementary, was selected as the student spokesperson for Dominion’s Project Plant It! program to educate children and plant trees. During March and April, she conducted interviews with media representatives from television, radio, newspaper and online outlets, sharing her passion for conservation and protecting the environment. Her media appearances included WTVR-TV 6’s Virginia This Morning, Radio Disney, Lite 98 with Bill Bevins, WCVE/NPR and the website Macaroni Kid, among others. She charmed the media reps with her knowledge of trees and her friendly personality. “It was cool meeting the reporters and telling them about Project Plant It!” she said. “I wanted other kids to know how much fun it is to learn about trees by playing games on the Project Plant It! website and planting trees at home.” Irene Cimino, manager of corporate public relations for Dominion and the corporate spokesperson for Project Plant It!, joined Alexis for all of the interviews. “A student’s perspective is so important because Project Plant It! was created to align with the Standards of Learning for the third-grade curriculum,” she said. “Alexis was very effective at communicating that Project Plant It! is both fun and educational.” Cynthia Jefferson, resource teacher at Colonial Trail Elementary, recommended Alexis for the important role of media spokesperson. “I was asking some third-graders about their activities to help the environment, and was I impressed by all the things that Alexis does at home,” said Jefferson. “She even unplugs the television and video games when the family is away to save on electricity. I knew that she was the right person for the job.” For details about the program, visit http://www.projectplantit.com . |
