Henrico schools earn state awards

Several Henrico County schools were among the 110 Virginia public schools selected by Governor Bob McDonnell and the Board of Education for the 2011 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.

The award is the highest honor under the Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) incentive program created by the Board of Education in 2007 which recognizes schools and divisions that achieve excellence goals and far exceed minimum state and federal accountability standards.

To qualify for the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence, schools and school divisions must meet all state and federal achievement benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and achieve applicable excellence goals in various areas.

The Henrico schools selected for the 2011 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence are: Arthur Ashe Elementary; Echo Lake Elementary; Glen Allen Elementary; Nuckols Farm Elementary; Pinchbeck Elementary; Rivers Edge Elementary; Shady Grove Elementary; Short Pump Elementary; Twin Hickory Elementary; and Deep Run High School.

"The school board and I are very proud of our schools and especially those recognized by Governor McDonnell and the Virginia Board of Education. These awards represent the commitment and high expectations we have of reaching the next level of excellence and ensuring
a quality education for all of our students," Superintendent Pat Russo said.

In Virginia, 323 schools earned the 2011 Board of Education Excellence Award, the second-tier honor in the VIP program. These schools and divisions also have met all state and federal accountability benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and have made significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities set by the board.

Henrico schools receiving the 2011 Board of Education Excellence Award are: Chamberlayne Elementary; Colonial Trail Elementary; Crestview Elementary; Gayton Elementary; Baker Elementary; Greenwood Elementary; Jackson Davis Elementary; Maybeury Elementary; Pemberton Elementary; Springfield Park Elementary; Three Chopt Elementary; Tuckahoe Elementary; Freeman High; and Godwin High School.

In Virginia, 289 schools earned the 2011 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award for having met all state and federal benchmarks for at least two consecutive years and making progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.
