A Henrico jewelry store is closing permanently after someone apparently broke in during the New Year's weekend and emptied the store of nearly all its merchandise, according to the store's owner.

Someone entered Beverly Hills Jewelers on Staples Mill Road through its back door sometime between the close of business on Friday, Dec. 30, and the morning of Tuesday Jan. 3, owner Gary Baker told the Citizen. The person or persons cut through a series of three doors to gain entry and also cut the wiring to the store's security system as well as the lights to the complex, Baker said.

Once inside, the burglars cut into two safes and emptied nearly the entire store, Baker said.

Henrico Police are still investigating the incident, said Lt. Eric Owens, who had no additional information to share Wednesday afternoon. No suspects have been identified.

But Baker told the Citizen that the incident would be too much for his business to overcome.

"They got it all," he said of the thieves. "These guys knew what they were doing. This wasn't their first rodeo."

Baker, who has been in the jewelry business for a quarter century, said his merchandise was not insured, so he must incur the losses himself. The prospect of trying to start over – essentially from scratch – is too daunting to consider, he said, so he's closing the business instead.
