Henrico installs more flashing-yellow traffic signals to improve safety


The Henrico County Department of Public Works will install new traffic signals at five additional intersections over the next two weeks to help motorists better understand the need to yield to oncoming traffic before turning left.

The signals feature a new flashing yellow arrow, which indicates that motorists may proceed after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The signals replace ones that have permitted left turns by showing a solid green circle with a sign that reads, “Left Turn Yield on Green.” The flashing yellow arrow appears during the signal’s normal cycles, which also guide motorists with solid red, green and yellow arrows.

The new signals are scheduled to be installed by May 11 at Cox Road and Waterfront Place; Cox and Sadler Place; Nuckols Road and Snowmass Road/Capital One Way; Nuckols and Concourse Boulevard; and Shady Grove and Twin Hickory roads. Police will direct traffic while work is under way.

The signals have been in place since February at Hungary Road and West End Drive; Hungary and Francistown roads; Gaskins Road and Ridgefield Parkway; and Creighton and Cedar Fork roads.

The Federal Highway Administration and Virginia Department of Transportation have approved the use of signals with flashing yellow arrows in light of research showing they reduce the number of left-turn accidents by more clearly conveying that motorists must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding.

project:HOMES’ ‘Renew Crew’ helps Henrico citizen


The project:HOMES "Renew Crew" (above) recently assisted an elderly member of the Laurel Presbyterian Church in Henrico by clearing brush, trimming hedges and raking leaves in her yard.

The Renew Crew serves low-income, disabled and elderly homeowners in need of small-scale home repairs such as porch, railing and step repairs, exterior painting, clearing overgrown yards, tearing down outbuildings, wheelchair ramps and other critical repairs and accessibility modifications. > Read more.

Alzheimer’s Walk raises $436,000


More than 2,000 people participated in the the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter's annual Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s Nov. 5 at Markel Plaza in Innsbrook. The event raised more than $436,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support programs and research.

The event is one of three walks that benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Richmond and is held in celebration of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Family Caregivers Month.

Donations to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be accepted through the end of the year and can be made at http://www.alz.org/walk. In total, the three walks this year have raised more than $644,344. > Read more.

Henrico County Public Schools officials will discuss the division's efforts to enhance and improve student achievement during a town hall meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Varina High School. The number of fully accredited Henrico County schools rose to 48 this year, up from 45 last year, but seven Henrico schools were denied accreditation by the Virginia Department of Education.
