Henrico HS surpasses world average for IB diploma percentage

While all members of the Henrico High School International Baccalaureate (IB) class of 2012 were awarded the Virginia Advanced Studies Diploma, the county's school system recently received notification that 93 percent of the IB Diploma candidates from that class were awarded the IB Diploma, surpassing the world average of 78.1 percent.

“I am extremely proud of the leadership of Mrs. Priscilla Biddle, Henrico High School’s IB coordinator, the IB faculty and the class of 2012, who have set a high bar for other classes to reach,” said Nancy LaVier, the IB Educational Specialist for HCPS.

The 61 members of the IB class at Henrico High School were awarded more than $5.3 million in scholarship funds, setting a new standard of excellence for the IB program.

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.

The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump

Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare

After nearly a year out of the restaurant industry, a well known 30-year Henrico restaurateur is ready to open up his fifth venture in Short Pump.

Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.

Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.

The Wine Loft opened in West Broad Village in January 2010, offering a full bar with wine, beer, spirits and a kitchen with tapas-style snacks. It offers a seasonal patio area along Whittall Way. Its walk-in wine “humidor” in plain view from the bar offers more than 85 wines by the glass ($6-$65) and about 250 by the bottle ($28 and up), with some emphasis on Italian wines.
