Henrico coalition seeks nominees for Community Champions Awards

Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services and the Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition are seeking youth and adult nominees for the 2012 Community Champions Awards. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 30.
 
The awards program recognizes young people who have provided exemplary, selfless service to an individual, an agency or the community without monetary gain. Past honorees have engaged in a range of volunteer activities, such as leading fund-raising efforts to benefit charitable causes, contributing volunteer service to nonprofit organizations and serving as tutors at local schools. Nominees must be Henrico residents between the ages of 12 to 18 as of Jan. 1, 2012 and still attending school. 

The Community Champions Awards also will salute adult volunteers and professionals for their work to build a healthier community for young people through a variety of prevention and education programs. Past honorees have demonstrated a strong commitment to reducing risk factors for youth and helping young people develop skills to become productive citizens.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992. > Read more.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.
