Henrico fifth-grader seeks regional spelling bee title
Henrico seventh-grader Aditya Kannoth will seek his first regional spelling bee title when he makes his fifth consecutive appearance in the event March 9 at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. Kannoth, a student at Moody Middle School, finished second in last year's event. He has won five straight Henrico County spelling bees.
Thirty students will represent school divisions from across the region as they compete for the title. Each speller has already won a series of bees (classroom, grade level, school, division) in order to advance to the regional bee. Spellers range in age from seven to 14. The youngest competitor is Nicole Frye, a seven-year-old second-grade student representing Dinwiddie County.
Kannoth is one of just four returning competitors from last year's event.
The 39th annual Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee will begin at 1 p.m. The winner of the event will represent Central Virginia at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Md., in May. In addition to an all-expenses paid trip to the national bee, the regional bee winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Times-Dispatch.
