HDH Performs 2000th daVinci Surgery

The Center for Surgical Innovation at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital reached a milestone today by completing its 2000th operation using the daVinci Robotic System. The procedure was performed by Dr. Danny Shaban at 11:30 a.m.

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital was the first hospital in the United States to perform general surgery using the daVinci Robotic system ten years ago. The computer-assisted surgical device was approved July 11, 2000, by the United States Food and Drug Administration and Dr. William Kelley performed the first operation the next day.

As predicted 10 years ago, the daVinci Robotic system has revolutionized surgery. Through a minimally invasive approach and greater precision, surgeons are able to provide patients with less pain and a quicker recovery.

Earnhardt gives Redskins a ride


Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88, stopped at Richmond Raceway Aug. 8 in advance of the track’s NASCAR weekend in September. He was joined by five players from the Washington Redskins, who were in town for the team's training camp, which concluded Aug. 14. The day in Richmond gave Earnhardt and the Redskins players an opportunity to see how the athletes compete in their respective sports. > Read more.

The READ Center is a top-200 cause finalist in State Farm’s Neighborhood Assist program, making it eligible to earn a $25,000 grant to support adult literacy in the Richmond region. The 40 organizations from across the nation with the most votes will win grants.

Glen Allen wins 2 of first 3 games at 14U Babe Ruth World Series


The host Glen Allen 14-year-old all-star baseball team won two of its first three games in pool play at the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series, which is it hosting at RF&P Stadium in Glen Allen. The team beat the Midwest Plains champions, 9-4, in its first game Aug. 10, then topped the Southwest champions, 7-3, Aug. 11 before dropping a 5-4 result to the Ohio Valley champions. > Read more.

Henricus Historical Park will offer James River Camp for children aged 9-12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15-17. Campers will explore the environmental features of the historic James River as 17th-century Virginia Indians and the Colonial settlers would have encountered it. Paddle a kayak and identify how the plants and animals of the river were hunted, gathered and used throughout history.
