Henrico County Public School Art students received a total of 148 awards in the recent Scholastics Art competition.
The Gold Key award, which is the highest recognition, was given to 59 works created by students in Henrico. The Gold Key winners’ artwork has been sent for national adjudication. National awardees and teachers will be celebrated at regional ceremonies, public events and the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. “Art students work extremely hard over years to develop and build skills to create works of art that have personal meaning and bring value to our lives. In this process they become creative and critical thinkers with the ability to communicate their ideas visually, verbally and in writing,” said Mike Gettings, the HCPS Art Specialist. “Their art, the show, and the awards offer tangible proof of the transformative nature of the visual arts on the creator, viewer and environment.” The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) sponsors this regional competition and will host the Scholastic Exhibition Feb. 18 to March 18. |

Henrico Junior 4-H camp registration open

For parents looking to keep their kids outside and away from the video games this summer, the Virginia Cooperative Extension is still accepting registrations for the 2013 Henrico Junior 4-H Camp.
The camp will be held June 17-23, and is open to boys and girls ages 9-13. A total of 10 spaces for boys and 27 spaces for girls remain available, and registration is open until May 24. The cost is $230, which includes lodging, meals, programs, instructional materials and charter bus transportation. > Read more.

Veteran restaurateur set to open in Short Pump
Tran’s Pho 1 Grill will serve Vietnamese fare
Paul Tran, along with his wife Ellen will open up Pho 1 Grill, a Vietnamese restaurant, in June in the Towne Center West Shopping Center.
Tran has been serving up Vietnamese food since the mid-’80s, his first being Que Huong on Rigsby Road. He also owned Mr. Chan’s on Horsepen Road and Saigon Gourmet on Hull Street Road. > Read more.
