Glen Allen woman wins $1 million

A Glen Allen woman couldn't believe her eyes when she scratched off the Virginia Lottery Million Dollar Cash Spectacular ticket she had just bought at an Eastern Henrico grocery store.

It seemed that the ticket that Diane Gray held was a top-prize winner, but she wasn't convinced. She called her sister, who couldn't believe it either.

“No, you won a thousand dollars,” she said.  “Look at the ticket again.”

Gray was standing in a parking lot at the time. She spotted someone standing two cars away, so she ran to the person – a total stranger – and showed her the ticket.

“You won a million dollars!” the stranger confirmed.

The $1 million prize is an annuity paid out over 25 years. Gray chose to take the cash option of $653,000 before taxes.

She bought the ticket at Kroger, 4816 South Laburnum Avenue. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Gray works as a customer service agent for an airline. She told lottery officials that she has no immediate plans for her winnings.

Million Dollar Cash Spectacular is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. Gray is the first top-prize winner, which means five million-dollar tickets are unclaimed.

The Virginia Lottery generates approximately $1.2 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools.
