Former Henrico students running SAT prep courses

A few Henrico residents and current UVA students are using their summer vacation to help college hopefuls with their SATs.

Adrian Troy and Yin Liu, graduates of Henrico High School, and Ian Major, a J.R. Tucker High alum, were selected by Revolution Prep to teach summer SAT courses in Henrico this summer after applying for the job online. The courses, scheduled to start in early July, consist of three weeks of lecture, with three two-hour lectures per week. The participating students also will take several practice SAT exams.

Founded in 2002, Revolution Prep is a nationwide academic tutoring and test prep company based in California. On average, students who participate in the Revolution Prep program have an SAT score improvement of anywhere from 200 to 300 points.

“They pick well-qualified students that scored well on [their SAT] tests to be instructors in their home area after hours of training,” Troy said.

Troy, Liu and Major will not only be teaching classroom courses and private tutoring programs, but also in a sense will be running a small business – trying to attract students to the program while keeping track of sales and finances.

“I think it’s a pretty cool opportunity to give back to the community and have a real, first-hand experience in an entrepreneurial endeavor,” Major said.

Both Troy and Major noted how their experiences at Henrico and Tucker High respectively have helped them prepare for this job.

“Well, generally being in high school and having gone through this process prepares me because I can personally relate to the students,” Troy said.

“I took numerous AP/Honors classes [at Tucker] that helped me get ready for UVA and obtain the knowledge I needed to score well on the SAT,” Major added.

Students interested in enrolling in the Revolution Prep program may enroll at any of the following websites: http://www.revolutionprep.com/ivy/adrian_t http:,//www.revolutionprep.com/ivy/yin_l or http://www.revolutionprep.com/ivy/major_i The S.AT prep course costs $599 per student, with private tutoring packages beginning at $999.

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I agree whole-heartedly with their ratings. Since I first visited the restaurant for my birthday in January, I was waiting for the perfect special occasion to return. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.

Run by the same restaurateurs as Pescados Latin Caribbean Seafood in Midlothian and Eat in Oregon Hill, Ironfish offers the same unique dishes and top-level customer service. > Read more.
