Driver not charged in Airport Drive fatality

No charges will be filed against the driver of the SUV that struck and killed 17-year-old Highland Springs High School student D'Shawn Lewis Nov. 30 on North Airport Drive, Henrico Police announced today. Police officials consulted with the Henrico Commonwealth Attorney's Office and concluded that the driver did not violate the law but that Lewis had failed to cross the roadway at an intersection or marked crosswalk, as required by law.

The driver told police that she saw Lewis walking in the travel lane on North Airport Drive near Airport lane and attempted to stop but was unable to do so in time to avoid striking him. Lewis died at the scene.
