Children’s gardening class planned

The Henrico County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering an eight-week class to teach children about basic gardening, food safety and healthy snacking.

The class, From Garden to Table, will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays from March 20 through May 8 at the Armour House and Gardens, 4001 Clarendon Road. The class is geared for students in third, fourth and fifth grades and will be limited to about 12 students. The cost is $30. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 15.

Working with master gardeners and Extension agents, students will grow plants in the Armour House’s greenhouse and children’s garden. Lessons will incorporate science, math, literature and social studies in group and individual activities that are hands-on and fun.

Part of the Junior Master Gardener program, the class will cover basic gardening, growing techniques, thrifty gardens, food safety, healthy snacks, life skills, career exploration, service learning and leadership development.
