Childcare providers celebrate their stars
Three child care programs and three home-based providers in Henrico were recognized with star ratings May 22 by the Virginia Star Quality Initiative (VSQI). Among the individuals and groups recognized were (from left, front row) Barbie Gallini (home-based provider), Sara Smith (Antioch Child Development Center), Audrey Hopkins (home-based provider), Elaine Kastleberg-Mentor, and [back row]: Mary Cox (Jack N Jill Child Development Center), Mary Landis-Mentor, and Shirley Shannon (home based provider).
Shady Grove YMCA Child Development Center also was recognized by VSQI, a statewide program designed to help in the search for high quality child care. In addition to the star rating, which is the first step of the VSQI process, providers who participate in the voluntary program are given tools to improve their quality through mentoring and other assistance. Managed locally by ChildSavers in partnership with United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg and Smart Beginnings, the VSQI system was designed by the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and Virginia’s Office of Early Development.
