Byrd M.S. principal wins R.E.B. Award

Byrd Middle School Principal Sharon Pope recently won the R.E.B. Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership. Jodie Brinkman, the principal at Echo Lake Elementary, was the runner-up.

“I know the high caliber of leaders who have earned this recognition, and to be considered in that league is truly an honor,” Pope said.

The R.E.B. Awards for Distinguished Leadership seek to recognize principals who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment. Four principals will be publicly recognized, one in each school district of the metropolitan area (i.e. the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico and the City of Richmond).

Each award will consist of a $7,500 cash grant to the principal and an additional $7,500 for school projects chosen by the principal. Principals who win this award are those who promote excellence, demonstrate leadership, inspire their students, and are advocates for their school and their faculty. They encourage team spirit and foster a connection and cooperation between their school and their community.

Preschoolers give pillows to families in need


A group of preschoolers from Chesterbrook Academy Preschool donated 56 pillows to local families in need at the Housing Families First shelter. The shelter is always in need of pillows and linens as, since families take the donated ones with them to their new homes.

Housing Families First provides shelter and support for homeless families and assist them in finding a permanent housing solution. The shelter serves people year-round, said Terri Iguina, operations and volunteer manager at Housing Families First. > Read more.

Dairy Queen’s Blizzard sales July 27 to benefit Children’s Hospital of Richmond


Dairy Queen’s 13th Annual Miracle Treat Day – Thursday, July 27 – will raise fund to benefit sick and injured children being treated at Children's Miracle Network hospitals throughout the United States. Locally, $1 or more from every Blizzard Treat sold at participating locations will be donated to the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Last year, the event raised more than $14,400 for the hospital. > Read more.

Henricus Historical Park will present “Colonial Crimes and Punishments,” an event that will focus on the systems of criminal punishments enacted by the English colonists and Powhatan Indians, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The English crimes and punishments will be based on the 1612 Laws Divine, Moral, and Martial as well as new Virginia laws after martial law ends, especially those for women, children and families. The Powhatan crime and punishments are based on written English accounts and native traditions. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in both trials and punishments.
