Fortune Magazine recently ranked Greater Richmond 13th best of all metro cities in the number of Fortune 1000 companies per 100,000 residents. Across all U.S. metro areas, Greater Richmond ranked 19th in the number of total Fortune 1000 companies, tying with Kansas City, Mo. and Phoenix, Az. Steve D’Andrea, a stroke survivor and Type 1 diabetic, and his wife, Gayle D’Andrea, a breast cancer survivor, recently founded the nonprofit organization Survivors Network LLC and the website,http://www.supportersofsurvivors.com, to help others facing these and other debilitating medical conditions. The website includes a blog where visitors can chat directly with the D’Andreas, links to other helpful and supportive websites and information on how to get financial support for those dealing with medical problems. Gayle D’Andrea, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Henrico. Smart phone users interested in starting or growing a small business can now find helpful resources at their fingertips via a new SBA mobile application from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The app features a built-in startup cost calculator to help estimate the costs associated with getting a business off the ground, plus an SBA partner locator to help users find SBA offices, Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers and SCORE. Users will also have mobile access to SBA video content and social media alerts to provide them with tips on the go.
