Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill is currently renovating 12 of its restaurants throughout Metro Richmond in an effort it calls the “River City Recharge.” Each restaurant will get a complete interior and exterior makeover worth $200,000, as well as menu and service enhancements. Applebees will also hire 369 team members over six months, including 18 managers. This project will invest more than $8 million in the Richmond/Norfolk market and it’s also one of the first markets in the country to go through these remodels. Completion is expected in mid-June. ComedySportz
has relocated to a new location in Gold’s Gym Plaza, 8906-H W. Broad St. The show schedule is 8 p.m. on Fridays and 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. ComedySportz no longer features a restaurant. For details, call 266-9377.

Firehouse Subs opened its fourth restaurant in the region May 9, at 8191-A Brook Rd. in Henrico. This is the fourth location for owner Randy Evans and partners Brad and Brett Osterhout.

A recent report released by HealthGrades named Bon Secours’ St. Mary’s Hospital among the top five percent in the nation for emergency medicine and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, including Parham Doctors’ Hospital and Retreat Doctors’ Hospital, among the top five percent in the nation for women’s health.

Bon Secours has launched ConnectCare, an application that allows patients to access their confidential information, including medical history, allergies, test results and medications, at any time via PC or Apple, iPhone, iPad or iPad Touch. This technology is the only one of its kind in the region. The patient’s care team, including physicians and medical staff, can also access this information to review charts and have dictated notes transcribed, enabling them to remotely make critical decisions.

Monica Longest Horsley, owner of invitation and stationary store By Invitation Only, has sold the business to Kerri DiStanlo, currently a stay-at-home mom and owner of Polka Dot Paper Shop, an online paper store. Horsley, a former school teacher, bought the business in 2002 and relocated it from Innsbrook to the Shoppes at Westgate in Short Pump. DiStanlo plans on adding new brands, creating online ordering and expanding the store’s wedding selection. Horsley plans to stay on staff throughout the summer to ensure a smooth transition.

Chick-fil-A in The Shops at Willow Lawn recently reopened in a new location just outside the mall. The new restaurant faces Willow Lawn Dr. just down from Starbucks and Staples. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Since opening in 1987, the store has generated hundreds of jobs and awarded more than $15,000 in scholarships to its restaurant team members. In addition, the restaurant is actively involved in many local schools, churches and community organizations.

Short Pump Ruritan Club donates $50k to Virginia War Memorial

The Short Pump Ruritan/Civic Association Foundation, Inc. recently presented a check for $50,000 to the Virginia War Memorial Educational Foundation. The donation will be used to finance the production of a new film about the Vietnam War as part of the War Memorial’s award-winning Virginians at War film series. > Read more.

A longtime Lakeside business owner and his partner are bringing "The Vintage Home Market" to the Richmond International Raceway Complex June 15-16.

Tony Turner has operated a business on Lakeside Avenue for nearly 20 years, beginning with Huckleberries Home & Garden for 10 years in The Hub Shopping Center and followed by Feathernesters across the street in the Lakeside Town Center. > Read more.

Fan Care offers heat relief to seniors

Qualifying senior citizens can receive free relief from summer heat through the 23rd annual Fan Care program, which provides fans and cooling assistance to seniors 60 and older in need.

The program is an initiative of Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging for seniors who meet income eligibility requirements and have a situation that threatens their health. > Read more.

A community ‘Kaffeehaus’ in Henrico’s Far West End

Born and raised in good old Europe, I am quite familiar with the traditional Austro-Hungarian tradition of the Kaffeehaus, an institution that represents a lifestyle of relaxing and thinking in a familiar environment with coffee, pastry, news, good service, marble tables, subdued sounds like the click-clack of the coffee machine, mugs and plates, conversations among patrons and with staff and a bit of low volume Johann Strauss music.

And so it was a thrill to find a modern version of a Kaffeehaus right here in Henrico County: The Daily Grind, near Short Pump Town Center. > Read more.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.

Food trucks arrive in the West End

West End residents no longer have to pick between fighting the summer mall crowds for a quick bite or breaking the bank to eat at a fine-dining spot because one Richmond group is bringing both to them.

RVA Street Foodies, the organization behind the outdoor food truck courts at the Virginia Historical Society and Hardywood Brewery, debuted its new Henrico food truck court at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road May 22. > Read more.
