Local business owners and key staff are invited to Shop RVA’s Local Moguls Social at The Tobacco Company, 1201 E. Cary St., on Aug. 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nonprofit organization Shop RVA created the informal gathering to give thanks to Richmond’s local business owners for bringing creativity and uniqueness to the city. The Residence Inn by Marriott Richmond West End recently completed a $1 million renovation of the 80-suite hotel located at 2121 Dickens Rd. Each of the suites was completely updated with new flooring, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, new beds and bedding, new furnishings, lighting, doors, artwork and wireless fire monitoring. The property is operated by Island Hospitality Management, Inc., an independent third-party management company, which also oversaw the renovation process.
Agents at Cushman & Wakefield Thalhimer recently handled the following lease negotiations: N1 Health, LLC subleased 5,867 square feet in the Reynolds Office Building at 6641 W. Broad St.; Active Escapes, LLC leased 2,400 square feet at 401 N. Ridge Rd.; Glatter Fitness leased 2,050 square feet in the Hub Shopping Center at 6945 Lakeside Ave.; and Traditional Asian Health Center, Inc. leased 1,032 square feet in the Springfield Broad Office Park at 3961 Stillman Pkwy.

Dogwood Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center, 5918 W. Broad St., will open in October 2011. The facility will offer specialty veterinary services including cardiology, 24-hour emergency, internal medicine, onsite MRI, neurology and surgery. The Children’s Museum of Richmond recently announced several new exhibits and remodeling projects at its Central and Short Pump locations. The new Assembly Required exhibit, a collection of 49 colorful, movable, modular climbing elements in a variety of whimsical shapes, is now at the Central location, as well as an ant habitat consisting of eight pods and resembling an ant space station. Central also has a newly reconfigured lobby. CMoR Short Pump has a new and improved Enchanted Castle that is larger and more interactive. It features a tunnel, slide and mini-climbing wall, as well as pretend play props. The popular Tot Spot has been moved and is more than twice its former size. It features soft sculpted cushions, pull-up bars, mirrors, sensory equipment and fine-motor manipulatives for the under-two set.
Chris Lowrie, of Midlothian, was recently named the new executive director of Commonwealth Parenting, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a stronger community by teaching proactive parenting skills to parents and caregivers in central Virginia. Lowrie has more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management positions, most recently serving as the executive director of International Sustainable Development, Inc. and, prior to that, as executive director of Housing Virginia, Inc. Lowrie replaces Elizabeth Pearce, who resigned her post for personal reasons.
The State Fair of Virginia will recreate the popular Goat Mountain exhibit at the entrance to the fair’s most popular feature, Young MacDonald’s Farm, thanks to a gift from Vulcan Materials Company’s Mideast Division. Vulcan has donated dozens of large boulders, known as shot rock, necessary to recreate Goat Mountain, as well as landscaped rock piles and a footbridge. The rocks are from Vulcan’s Springfield Quarry located in northern Henrico County. Goat Mountain will become a permanent outdoor feature near Young McDonald’s Farm at the State Fair, which takes place Sept. 29 through Oct. 9 at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell.

MAR. 27, 11 A.M. – No one was injured by a townhouse fire that occurred early Monday morning in the 200 block of Knightsmanor Court, near the intersection of Azalea Avenue and Richmond-Henrico Turnpike.
The first Henrico Fire officials were on scene in less than four minutes and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story townhouse. Firefighters from the first-arriving fire engine and ladder truck made their way to the townhome involved in fire and searched for victims through high heat and reduced visibility. > Read more.

In observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week (April 2-8), and to honor victims of crime in Henrico County and raise awareness about crime victims' rights and issues, Henrico County Victim/Witness will hold a commemorative ceremony and informative walk April 5. > Read more.
Richmond OB-GYN, an obstetrics and gynecology provider of Bon Secours Richmond Health System, will open a new office at Bon Secours Heart and Vascular Institute building in Henrico County. The building, which serves as an extension of Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital, is located in Reynolds Crossing at Forest and Glenside Avenues. The practice opened for patients March 21.
Alice Hirata, M.D., joined the Bon Secours Medical Group and is now part of the physician team at Richmond OB-GYN, where she will help to establish a midwifery practice at St. Mary’s Hospital. > Read more.
Sports Backers announced recently a new three-year partnership with Markel, making the Innsbrook-based insurance provider the new title sponsor of the Markel Richmond Half Marathon. The race, now in its 10th year, is part of the Anthem Richmond Marathon weekend Nov. 11, which also features the VCU Health 8k.
Known as 'American's Friendliest Marathon' and celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017, the Anthem Richmond Marathon and companion races annually draw participants from all 50 states and dozens of countries around the world. > Read more.

Candidates for several local and state races are emerging, as both the Henrico Republican and Democratic parties finalize their nominating processes.
In Henrico, a number of candidates are expected to pursue the Brookland District seat on the Board of Supervisors during a special election in November. (The seat opened when longtime Republican board member Dick Glover died at 82 in February). The winner of that election will serve the remainder of Glover's term, which expires at the end of 2019. > Read more.
St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.
Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.
Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.
Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. CAT Theatre and When There’s A Will director Ann Davis recently announced the cast for the dark comedy which will be performed May 26 through June 3.
The play centers around a family gathering commanded by the matriarch, Dolores, to address their unhappiness with Grandmother’s hold on the clan’s inheritance and her unreasonable demands on her family.
Pat Walker will play the part of Dolores Whitmore, with Graham and Florine Whitmore played by Brent Deekens and Brandy Samberg, respectively. > Read more.
