Virginia Eye Institute is now accepting applications for its 20th annual Cataract Mission program, an outreach program designed to help Virginians in need receive free cataract surgery. Eligibility criteria include a lack of insurance (including Medicare or Medicaid) and a lack of financial means to pay for the surgery. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 1, 2013. About 80 Virginia Eye Institute volunteers work with the program each year and the program has donated over 240 surgeries to date. Patients also get post-op follow-up at no charge and a new temporary lens. Qualified candidates may call 287-4905 to request an application.
WTVR Channel 6, the Better Housing Coalition and Woodfin are currently accepting nominations for its second annual “A Warmer Winter,” a public service effort to bring a new furnace to a family in need in Metro Richmond. Nominations should include a description of why a family or friend deserves a new home heating system. Forms can be obtained at http://www.wtvr.com/warmerwinter or http://www.askwoodfin.com and will be accepted through Jan. 13, 2013.
K2 Trophies and Awards, an online trophy retailer, recently purchased a 50,000 square foot building on Jacque Street in Henrico as its new headquarters. The building previously served as the home of Binswanger Glass. K2 Trophies and Awards has been leasing space nearby on Dabney Road but outgrew the space and will move into its new location in March. The company was founded in 2002 and is led by President Charlie Moss.
HHHunt Communities has announced its newest community in Henrico, Westin Estates. Located near Short Pump, Westin Estates will feature custom homes on one-acre plus wooded lots. Home prices start in the upper $500,000s. The first phase of development includes 24 lots and construction of new homes will begin in early 2013. HHHC has developed other communities near Short Pump including Wellesley, Wyndham and Twin Hickory. Agents with Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer recently handled the following lease negotiations: Peebles – renewed its lease of 59,524 square feet in Fairfield Commons Mall on Nine Mile Road; MAACO – leased 9,510 square feet at 3318 W. Broad St.; American Family Fitness – leased 6,345 square feet at 4200 Innslake Dr. to serve as their corporate office headquarters; Lynch & Associates – renewed its lease of 2,193 square feet in Commerce Plaza I at 2809 Emerywood Pkwy.; and Fresh and Press – leased 1,120 square feet in Merchants Walk Shopping Center at 7574 W. Broad St.
The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) has hired David Bass as public relations manager, Veronica Boyett as conference specialist, Jennifer Harris as business development associate and Amalia Melis as marketing and communications manager. Bass is responsible for leading strategies for VSCPA public and media relations and community outreach programs. Boyett will plan, manage and implement VSCPA conferences and will work on other educational programs and events. Harris is responsible for creating high-value partnerships to benefit members and affiliated organizations. Melis will lead the strategies for VSCPA marketing and communications efforts as well as brand and social media management.
Sally Green, first vice president and COO of The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, will be the guest in a C-Suite Conversation Jan. 16 at University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business. C-Suite Conversations are unscripted interviews with business decision-makers in central Virginia. The series highlights challenges and opportunities of high-level executives and provides insight about balancing leadership obligations with the needs of stakeholders. Robins School Senior Associate Dean Richard Coughlan will interview Green. Cliff Hamner has joined the Commercial Property Services team at Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer as a senior portfolio manager. Hamner has over 20 years of experience in property management, including multi-family, retail, office, industrial and office-medical properties. He recently worked for Jones Lang LaSalle and prior to moving to Richmond, was a regional property manager for Weingarten Realty in Raleigh, N.C., where he oversaw a portfolio totaling over 3.3 million square feet of retail and industrial. He has also worked for Craig Davis Properties in Cary, NC.

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.
Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.
The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.
