The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen recently announced the addition of two more gallery spaces. The Glass Doors Gallery has been created to showcase three-dimensional artwork and the Midway Gallery has been added as another area for exhibiting paintings, drawings and photographs. These galleries join two other galleries – The Gumenick Family Gallery and the Slantwall Gallery. The current exhibition in the Glass Doors Gallery is “Creatures in the Hall” which features plush art as well as drawings and paintings by Richmond artist Phil Barbato. Colorful, whimsical plush animals fill the Gallery Doors Gallery cases along with two dimensional paintings of similarly whimsical animals. This exhibition continues through Nov. 18. The Midway Gallery will be an exhibition area for artwork in conjunction with the upcoming El Dia de los Muertos festival on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Venture Forum, Richmond’s promoter of the local entrepreneurial community, recently announced its Greater Richmond’s Companies to Watch annual event, to be held Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Boathouse at Rockett’s Landing, 4708 E. Old Main St. The GRCTW program promotes the entrepreneurial environment of the Greater Richmond area by highlighting early-stage businesses that have the potential to become significant contributors to the local economy. A select number of companies will be awarded at the ceremony. The School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community (SPARC) will unveil the Sara Belle November Educational Theater and the opening of “Smokey Joe’s Café” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18-19 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 19-20. The new artistic space, once a taxi garage, has been renovated, restored and transformed into a warm and intimate theatre space, with tiered and comfortable seating and state-of-the-art visual and audio systems. Named for the key benefactor’s wife, Sara Belle November, the theater venue is dedicated to the instruction and presentation of the performing arts. A talented 14 member SPARC ensemble will perform “Smokey Joe’s Café” on the new stage. The show is a rollicking look back at the 50s and 60s, featuring the timeless music of the songwriting team of Leiber & Stoller. The songs are supported by many of the popular dances associated with each time period, including the Jerk, Pony, Swim, Stroll, Twist and rocks with a live onstage combo accompanying this vivacious cast. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital recently appointed Barbara Joynes and Richard M. Nelms to its Board of Trustees. Joynes is a partner and member of the executive team at The Martin Agency where she serves as director of account management for Martin Direct. In her role, she leads the agency’s work in Digital Media, Relationship Marketing, Data Analytics, Telmark, Media, Integrated Production and Information Technology. Nelms is the former president of Long & Foster’s Richmond, Hampton Roads and Southwest Virginia regions. He started Bowers, Nelms and Fonville in 1967 and grew the company into the region’s leading real estate firm before merging the organization with Long & Foster in 1998. He serves on the Board for the American Heart Association and is past president of the American Cancer Society.

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
