GRTC Transit System recently was named a Silver Winner in the 2011 Summit Marketing Effectiveness Award competition for their marketing department’s work in the “Safety First. Service Always” video campaign for the GRTC fixed route bus service. Companies and individuals from more than 50 countries across five continents participate annually in the Summit International Awards. In 2011, judges analyzed submissions and selected only 18% of the 504 entries to achieve finalist status.
Alison W. Eckis recently joined Wise Benefits, Inc. as an employee benefits specialist. Eckis is a former business owner, benefits administrator and carrier representative who specializes in individual and group benefits. She worked most recently with Premier Insurance Agency, Ltd. The Board of Directors for United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg recently selected Claiborne S. Mason to serve as interim CEO now that Sherri Brach has stepped down to become executive vice president for investor relations at United Way Worldwide. Mason, owner of the strategic planning and marketing firm C.S. Mason Consulting and a former senior vice president with The Martin Agency, has been a member of United Way’s Board since 1996. Stephen Scherger and Board Chair-Elect Gail Letts, Central Virginia regional president and CEO at Sun Trust Banks, Inc., will co-lead the search committee. A national search firm will partner with the search committee to drive the process.

“Like to Love” is the theme for this year’s VA-1 Tourism Summit, to be held Oct. 17-19 at the Hilton Hotel & Spa at Short Pump, 12042 W. Broad St. The summit is the premier event for the Virginia Tourism Industry. To boost hunger awareness in the U.S., Tyson Foods recently launched a social media campaign enabling the public to choose three food banks to each receive a 30,000-pound protein donation from the company. The donation will provide 120,000 meals for each food bank. With the help of Feeding America, Tyson selected ten food banks from communities in the U.S. where per capita food insecurity is highest. The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) recently awarded Greater Richmond Partnership, Inc., a regional economic development organization, with four awards at its annual conference. IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Awards Program annually recognizes the world’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials and the year’s most influential leaders. The program honors organizations and individuals in 28 categories for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Since 1997, the Partnership has received 52 awards from international and regional organizations recognizing the team for its economic development work and innovative promotional tools. Outreach Magazine recently named the Richmond Outreach Center in South Richmond the fastest-growing church in America, indicating a vast 83% growth in attendance from 2009 to 2010. When the church, known as The ROC, opened in 2001, Richmond had the fifth-highest murder rate in the U.S. Since then, it has dropped to 55th. Local and federal governments have recognized The ROC numerous times for its contribution to that reduction through ministries such as after-school and sports programs for kids living in public housing. The Outreach 100 lists were compiled by LifeWay Research and include only Protestant churches, as defined by the American Religious Data Archive, that opted to participate in the study.

The Altria Companies Employee Community Fund (ACECF) recently awarded nearly $2.2 million in grants to nonprofits based in Central Virginia. A committee of 26 employees chose the grant recipients from nearly 145 proposals, with 80 local organizations receiving grants. Of the 80 organizations, 11 are first-time recipients. Area organizations include: Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter, Circle Center Adult Day Services, Henrico CASA, Junior Achievement of Central Virginia, American Red Cross Greater Richmond Chapter, Big Brothers Big Sisters Services, Inc., Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond, Comfort Zone Camp, Inc., Connor’s Heroes Foundation, Feed More, Inc., Greater Richmond ARC, Greater Richmond SCAN, Safe Harbor, Senior Connections The Capital Area Agency on Aging, St. Joseph’s Villa, YMCA of Greater Richmond and more. In Central Virginia, the ACECF has awarded 868 grants totaling $25.6 million over the last 10 years.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will host a candlelight vigil of remembrance and hope Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. at the University of Richmond, outside the Cannon Chapel. The public is invited to attend and join MADD to honor victims of impaired driving crashes, while helping to remind the community to be safe during the holidays. > Read more.

Event will help kick of Marine Corps' 'Toys for Tots' campaign
All 140 A.C. Moore locations will serve as drop-off centers this year for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, and all toys collected will stay in the local communities served by the stores in which they are donated.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, the Willow Lawn location will kick off the month-long program by hosting a "Make & Take" craft event for kids. Children ages six and older will be able to make a craft and take it home with them. Representatives from the Marines will be in-store to teach customers about the Toys for Tots program. A.C. Bella’s feels – and tastes – like Italy should
Short Pump is known for its share of chain restaurants and strip malls, but diners looking for something more distinct can certainly find it without heading downtown or to nearby Charlottesville.
In fact, local husband-and-wife restaurateurs Valeria Bisenti and Doug Muir brought a taste of Charlottesville (and Italy) to Short Pump when they took a chance and opened Bella’s second location in the same shopping strip as Wal-Mart and Peter Chang China Cafe. (Bella’s original location is on Main Street in downtown Charlottesville.)
For a local Italian restaurant, Bella’s is as “Mom and Pop” as its gets. Valeria is Mom, and Doug is Pop. Since its opening about six months ago, diners have been eating rich comfort foods and drinking Italian wines. > Read more.

The Cultural Arts Center unveils a new exhibit – "Sizing Up!" – Nov. 20-Jan. 18 in the Gumenick Family Gallery.
Artist Chuck Larivey has spent the past three years "sizing up" – creating large-scale oil paintings that are designed to engage their viewers in a monumental way by using size to captivate them and make them a part of the artistic experience.
