Henrico Federal Credit Union has teamed with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to help local students learn to manage their money in a fun, real-world way. Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks which aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education. Students are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay their bills and balance their budget, as well as how to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. Banzai also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, savings and more. The program is available to students and teachers for free. Pamela Heflin Strieffler, of Richmond, has rejoined Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer as vice president in the firm’s Glen Allen office and will continue to specialize in retail sales and leasing. Strieffler started her commercial real estate career with Porter Realty in 1996 and originally joined Thalhimer in 1999. She spent several years with The Rebkee Company and was most recently with The Shopping Center Group. Strieffler graduated from James Madison University and lives with her husband, Kevin, and their three children.

The restaurant Mooyah will open in the Short Pump area in early 2013. Colonial Shooting Academy (CSA) has been recognized as a five-star shooting facility by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). This distinction makes CSA the first five-star range in Virginia, the fourth on the East Coast and one of only 25 nationwide. Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the University of Richmond’s Robins School of Business, will lead a discussion on women in finance at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 in Queally Hall’s Ukrop Auditorium. A panel of four women will explore the challenges of succeeding in the financial services industry and will discuss leadership, professional experience in the industry and achieving work/life balance. Martin’s Food Markets’ A+ School Rewards will return Oct. 7 and continue through March 30, 2013. To participate in the program, customers must sign up and designate their chosen schools by visiting their local Martin’s or at http://www.martinsfoods.com/aplus A+ S.chool Rewards are accrued with each purchase a customer makes using his or her BonusCard. There is no restriction on what schools can do with the cash they earn. Beginning in November, current school totals can be found on the A+ website.
The Altria Companies Employee Community Fund has awarded nearly $2 million in grants to nonprofits based in central Virginia, including three in Henrico: Circle Center Adult Day Services – received a $50,000 grant to provide funding for full daycare for seniors with limited financial resources; The Society of St. Andrew – received a $30,000 grant to support the Food Recovery Operation in Virginia; and the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter – received a $15,000 grant to provide for respite care for seniors with dementia. In central Virginia, the ACECF has awarded 948 grants totaling $27.6 million in the last 11 years.
Kitchen Thyme is forming a supper club. Once a month, guest chefs will be featured for a fine dining experience at Kitchen Thyme with a once in a life time menu. Prices, times and menus will vary. Former Sandston resident Mildred Taylor celebrated her 106th birthday Aug. 9. Taylor, who now lives in Powhatan, is still a member of Sandston Baptist Church. She was visited the day after her birthday by several members of the church, who played for her a recording of the entire church membership singing happy birthday to her during worship. > Read more.
YMCA officials gathered last week to break ground on the new Tommy J. West Aquatic Center at the Shady Grove Family YMCA on Nuckols Road. The center, which will featured 7,600 square feet of competitive and recreational space, including water slides, play areas for children and warmer water for those with physical limitations, is the fourth phase of a $4 million expansion at the facility. West was president and CEO of Capital Interior Contractors and a founding member of the Central Virginia Region of the Virginia Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. > Read more.

Short Pump brewery offers more than just beer
I am still (happily) thinking about my entire experience at Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery last week. Knowing nothing about this new brewery out of Denver, I was leery of brew-pub in the heart of Short Pump Town Center – this is not what I’d usually think of as a perfect fit, and yet, it was.
The restaurant and craft brewery opened in early June and features 10 beers made by female brewmaster Becky Hammond (pictured). This is the restaurant’s second location in Virginia; the first is in Arlington. Behind glass walls, customers watched the beer brewing in massive steel barrels. For our up-and-coming beer region, it makes sense that Short Pump would jump on board.
As I walked up to the back of the mall near the comedy club, I was taken aback by what I saw: at the top of the stairs was an overflowing restaurant with outdoor seating, large umbrellas and dangling outdoor lights. > Read more.
The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is now registering participants for its fall 2014 schedule of classes.
The center will offer more than 100 classes for children and adults, covering topicssuch as culinary arts, fiber arts, visual and performance arts and more. Instruction is structured to appeal to a wide range of abilities, from beginners to experts of all ages. Class sizes are kept small to ensure maximum benefit for participants with generally no more than 15 students. > Read more.
