Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital has achieved “Triple Crown” from Thomson Reuters, an industry leader in health care data. The hospital has been recognized three times this year—for excellence in overall organization performance in the 2012 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals study; as a recipient of the Everest Award, which honors hospitals that have achieved both the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement over a five-year period; and as one of the nation’s 50 Top Hospitals for Cardiovascular Care. St. Mary’s is one of three hospitals in the nation, and the only one in Virginia, to receive all three awards.

Bon Secours Richmond Health System has announced the opening of the new St. Mary’s Wound Care Center at Reynolds Crossing. The health system’s second full-service wound care center offers highly specialized treatment for chronic wounds, including hospital-based outpatient wound care, disease management and diabetes care. Dr. Gregg L. Londrey, of Virginia Surgical Associates, will serve as medical director. The Center is located at 6900 Forest Ave., Suite 115, in the Reynolds Crossing medical complex. The National Institutes of Health–National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has awarded Laura Runyen-Janecky, associate professor of biology at the University of Richmond, a three-year, $344,059 grant to continue her work on bacteria carried by tsetse flies and their potential implications for tsetse-borne disease. Runyen-Janecky’s project will be conducted with research assistance from Richmond undergraduates and in collaboration with professors in Yale University’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University School of Medicine. Runyen-Janecky was a visiting associate professor at Yale in 2010. Funds will be used for employing undergraduate students for summer research, materials, supplies and travel to present results. Runyen-Janecky has taught at Richmond since 2002.

Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.

Kicking the weekend off is Glorious Christmas Nights’ production of “Finding Christmas” at West End Assembly of God. Gayton Baptist Church’s annual Jazz Nativity starts tonight.
