Virginia Credit Union members are now able to deposit checks from virtually anywhere, at any time, using their smartphones. VACU mobile banking users deposit checks by taking a picture of the check using the camera on their iPhone or Android smartphone. Since launching mobile banking last summer, nearly 35,000 of VACU’s members have signed up. VACU also recently launched a new service for online banking members, Money Tracker. The free personal financial management tool helps members manage and track income, expenses and spending. Members may also create a savings goal and monitor their progress toward achieving their goal month by month.
Averett University’s Glen Allen Campus, 4880 Cox Rd. in Innsbrook, will host a job fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27. The fair is open to the community and will feature workshops on resume writing, interview skills and electronic job searching. More than 40 local employers will be onsite including VCU Health System, Cox Media Group, Nationwide Insurance, Wells Fargo, Shamin Hotels, General Electric and Mass Mutual. Sports Backers announced today the first-ever Martin’s Tour of Richmond cycling event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6. This ‘Gran Fondo’ will feature a full 102-mile loop around Richmond as well as a 58-mile option and a 29-mile option. The full 102-mile course starts and finishes at the Richmond International Raceway complex, which is also the site of the post-ride party for all three distances. The 58-mile course is projected to start at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Goochland Campus, and the 29-mile course is projected to start at Poor Farm Park in Hanover. The post-ride celebration will feature live entertainment, beer and dinner for all participants. Sports Backers’ new Active RVA initiative, a program focusing on making the Richmond area more bike and pedestrian friendly, will serve as the official charity. Barry M. Taylor, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Richmond, has announced his retirement from the organization effective December 31. Taylor has been with the YMCA for more than 36 years and served associations in Maryland, Pennsylvania and California before coming to Richmond in 2002. During his tenure, the Y was able to provide over $6 million in financial assistance to families and individuals and delivered programs for students in seven school districts. Taylor has also helped oversee partnerships with dozens of nonprofit organizations. Jamelle Wilson, vice-chair of the Y’s board of directors, is leading a search committee that has been formed by the board.
To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.
Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.
The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.
While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.

‘Fire and Rescue’ proves too predictable, boring
Planes: Fire and Rescue opens with a dedication to the hero firefighters of the world. It’s an admirable notion, and it makes sense, given that this is a film about planes that fight fires.
But here it might be a little out of place, as Planes: Fire and Rescue has a few things on its mind besides supporting the men and women who routinely throw themselves into burning buildings.
Like money. Lots and lots of money – into the 11-figures-and-counting range. In case you weren’t aware, 2006’s Cars was the biggest moneymaker Disney had in decades – not because of how much green the film printed at the box office, but because a combination of toys, games and snack foods stamped with the Cars seal of approval routinely pulls in tens of billions of dollars per year. > Read more.
