Virginia Credit Union members are now able to deposit checks from virtually anywhere, at any time, using their smartphones. VACU mobile banking users deposit checks by taking a picture of the check using the camera on their iPhone or Android smartphone. Since launching mobile banking last summer, nearly 35,000 of VACU’s members have signed up. VACU also recently launched a new service for online banking members, Money Tracker. The free personal financial management tool helps members manage and track income, expenses and spending. Members may also create a savings goal and monitor their progress toward achieving their goal month by month.
Averett University’s Glen Allen Campus, 4880 Cox Rd. in Innsbrook, will host a job fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27. The fair is open to the community and will feature workshops on resume writing, interview skills and electronic job searching. More than 40 local employers will be onsite including VCU Health System, Cox Media Group, Nationwide Insurance, Wells Fargo, Shamin Hotels, General Electric and Mass Mutual. Broad St.; and Jorgensen Group, LLC – leased 1,812 square feet in Westerre Commons at 3711 Westerre Pkwy.
Sports Backers announced today the first-ever Martin’s Tour of Richmond cycling event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6. This ‘Gran Fondo’ will feature a full 102-mile loop around Richmond as well as a 58-mile option and a 29-mile option. The full 102-mile course starts and finishes at the Richmond International Raceway complex, which is also the site of the post-ride party for all three distances. The 58-mile course is projected to start at the J. Sargeant Reynolds Goochland Campus, and the 29-mile course is projected to start at Poor Farm Park in Hanover. The post-ride celebration will feature live entertainment, beer and dinner for all participants. Sports Backers’ new Active RVA initiative, a program focusing on making the Richmond area more bike and pedestrian friendly, will serve as the official charity. Barry M. Taylor, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Richmond, has announced his retirement from the organization effective December 31. Taylor has been with the YMCA for more than 36 years and served associations in Maryland, Pennsylvania and California before coming to Richmond in 2002. During his tenure, the Y was able to provide over $6 million in financial assistance to families and individuals and delivered programs for students in seven school districts. Taylor has also helped oversee partnerships with dozens of nonprofit organizations. Jamelle Wilson, vice-chair of the Y’s board of directors, is leading a search committee that has been formed by the board.
On June 13, the Short Pump Rotary Club partnered with Schnabel Engineering for a day of volunteer work with Rebuilding Together Richmond. Team members (among them [from left] Chris Rufe, Melissa Abraham, Rick Naschold, and Micky Ogburn) completed a variety of repairs and home improvements ranging from painting and landscaping to cabinet installation and fence building.
“It was a privilege to be involved in this project," said club president Melissa Abraham. "The homeowner kept thanking the volunteers, but I think all of us would agree we are the ones who actually benefited. It was an opportunity to help a community member, fellowship with great people and improve our handyman skills." > Read more.
Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.
