Business in brief

Puritan Cleaners recently announced its 8th annual 100,000 Meals campaign. The program, which supports the Central Virginia Food Bank (CVFB), will run through June 9. Puritan Cleaners will be collecting monetary and food donations at all 13 Puritan locations during the campaign and home delivery route managers will be collecting on their routes as well. Puritan will also be partnering with area schools and businesses during the campaign. Monetary donations are especially useful and give the CVFB greater flexibility to purchase high-need items at lower-than-retail costs. The CVFB can typically provide five meals with one dollar. The campaign will culminate June 6 at Puritan’s Staples Mill location from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with “Matt’s Great 8 Tailgate” featuring TV 8’s weather anchor Matt DiNardo and others. There will be live music and free food. For details on the 100,000 meals program, visit http://www.puritancleaners.com .

Howard Hughes Medical Institute recently awarded a $1.4 million, four-year grant to the University of Richmond to build upon its successful Integrated Quantitative Science course and develop a new program to promote diversity in math and science. It is the third HHMI grant awarded to Richmond in the past eight years. The new grant will build on IQS and create URISE (University of Richmond Integrated Science Experience), a program that will address the low percentage of underrepresented populations that graduate with science and math majors and pursue careers in those fields. URISE students will spend five weeks in a paid, pre-freshman summer program, then enroll either in IQS or a new series of interdisciplinary science and math courses — Science, Math and Research Training (SMART) — for students with less rigorous high school preparation in those disciplines. They will participate in full-time research the following summer. The new program also will add post-baccalaureate and post-doctoral fellows to support students’ transition from college and graduate school into careers in science and math (STEM) fields.

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.

Run by the same restaurateurs as Pescados Latin Caribbean Seafood in Midlothian and Eat in Oregon Hill, Ironfish offers the same unique dishes and top-level customer service. > Read more.
