Arts and crafts specialty retailer Michaels will open its new store at White Oak Village, 4531 S. Laburnum Ave., on May 20 at 10 a.m. Key departments such as jewelry, scrapbooking and kids have been expanded and re-organized for easy shopping. A card-making event will be held during the grand opening and craft supplies will be donated to a local Starlight Children’s Foundation chapter. Comcast recently opened a new Xfinity Service Center at the existing customer service center location at 5401 Staples Mill Rd. Designed around the needs and feedback of customers, the newly renovated retail store features a new queuing system that provides Comcast customers with an opportunity to explore, learn about and interact directly with Xfinity products and services at kiosks rather than waiting in line for service. Other features include flat screen televisions and a 3D TV set and glasses that allow customers to experience 3D viewing. The Xfinity Service Center is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Curves women's gyms in the Richmond area will give a free 30-day membership to any non-member who visits a club throughout National Women's Health Week, May 13-19. Area gyms will hold week-long Open House events to encourage interested women to check out their local club, pick up free health information, ask questions, get a free fitness assessment and take advantage of the free 30-day membership offer. Visitors may also sign up to attend a special program on National Curves Day, May 17, featuring messages from health experts and fun activities designed to raise awareness of small, practical steps women can take to get healthy. Qualifying senior citizens can receive free relief from summer heat through the 23rd annual Fan Care program, which provides fans and cooling assistance to seniors 60 and older in need.

A community ‘Kaffeehaus’ in Henrico’s Far West End

Born and raised in good old Europe, I am quite familiar with the traditional Austro-Hungarian tradition of the Kaffeehaus, an institution that represents a lifestyle of relaxing and thinking in a familiar environment with coffee, pastry, news, good service, marble tables, subdued sounds like the click-clack of the coffee machine, mugs and plates, conversations among patrons and with staff and a bit of low volume Johann Strauss music.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.
