Commonwealth Eye Care Associates, 10431 Patterson Ave., is inviting blind and visually impaired artists from metro Richmond to participate in their first annual CECA Insight Art Exhibit displaying paintings, drawings, sculptures and other mixed media. Artwork will be selected based on the artist’s originality, expressive use of media, artistic excellence and on their ability to inspire dialogue about the role of vision in the creative process. Selected artwork will be displayed in the CECA reception area from August 2-16. Participants may enter up to four pieces in each category; entries are due June 1. The Henrico Business Council will host its Henrico Café event at the 28th annual Lebanese Food Festival on Friday, May 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Maronite Catholic Church, 4611 Sadler Rd. in Glen Allen. Guests will gather in the covered patio between the sanctuary and church parking lot and then proceed as a group to the festival area. SyCom Technologies, headquartered in Richmond, recently received the Cisco Partner Summit theater award for outstanding customer satisfaction for the East area. Out of all of the Eastern US Cisco partners, SyCom was chosen number one in customer satisfaction with a score of 4.95 on a 5-point scale. Cisco Partner Summit awards are presented at three levels: global, geo and theater, and reflect a partner’s performance in a given geographic region of the United States or Canada. The Princeton Review and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently published the free downloadable book, “Guide to 322 Green Colleges,” in which University of Richmond was listed. The Princeton Review selected colleges for the book based on a survey it conducted of hundreds of colleges across the United States and Canada. Results also are used to tally a “green rating score” of 60-99, used in the company’s other college guidebooks and website. Colleges in the book are not ranked, but each scored a green rating of at least 83. Richmond scored 95.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) recently named University of Richmond to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the fourth time in recognition of commitment to, and achievement in, community service. Schools are selected annually for the scope and innovation of service projects, percent of student participation in community service, incentives for service and the extent of service-learning courses in the curriculum. CNCS is a federal agency that oversees service through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps and Learn and Serves America, and leads President Barack Obama’s initiative, United We Serve.

Garden greens


Emily Francis (left) of Richmond Green Drinks and Cary Jamieson of The Steward School checked out the cherry tomato crop Aug. 20 at the school's Bryan Innovation Lab following a visit by members of Green Drinks. Jamieson, director of the Bryan Innovation Lab, was among the speakers who pointed out various sustainable features of the building and its surroundings, including geothermal, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy systems, as well as rain gardens and large storage cisterns (like the one pictured) to minimize groundwater pollution. > Read more.

Canterbury Recreation Association ‘wins’ the ‘Dunk Hunger’ drive


For the third consecutive year, the Canterbury Recreation Association in Short Pump donated the most meals to the fourth-annual "Dunk Hunger" campaign, which raises money and food donations for FeedMore's Central Virginia Food Bank. Swim teams and community pools throughout the region combined to raise the equivalent of 77,404 meals this year, with the Canterbury group earning the Gold Medal, with 17,454 meals contributed.

CRA will earn a winners’ bash Aug. 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. at its pool on Pump Road.

“Our pool has adopted Dunk Hunger into its culture with fun ways to raise food and funds," said Canterbury’s Dunk Hunger chairman Jack McSorley, a Freeman High School junior. > Read more.
