A heartening advance

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital physician Charles Zacharias shows a patient video of the patient’s own heart, as seen during an earlier procedure conducted as part of the hospital’s TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) program. HCA Virginia is the only hospital in the region to offer the minimally-invasive, non-surgical procedure, which provides a therapeutic alternative for patients with severe aortic stenosis who have previously been deemed inoperable.

The hospital hosted an open house Sept. 5 to demonstrate the procedure, which has already been used on five patients who otherwise could not have received the life-saving assistance they needed.
