4-H sale of apples, peanuts, honey, cookbooks underway

The Henrico County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension has launched its fall sale of apples, peanuts, honey and cookbooks with proceeds to benefit the 4-H Youth Development program.

The annual sale features Virginia-grown produce and, for the first time, four different cookbooks, each with more than 140 recipes. The items and their prices are:

• Winesap and York apples, $18.50 per half bushel, which equates to about 88 cents per pound;

• Raw peanuts, with recipes, $9 per two-pound sack;

• Salted and unsalted deluxe cocktail peanuts, $12 per two-pound sack;

• Honey, $7 per one-pound jar; and

• Cookbooks, $6.50 apiece. The titles are “5 Ingredients or Less,” “Kids in the Kitchen,” “Busy Mom’s Cookbook” and “Better Health.” Each spiral-bound cookbook measures 5.5 by 4.25 inches, with a soft cover and 150 pages.

Order forms are available at http://www.co.henrico.va.us/extension; the Extension Office in the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive; any Henrico library; and by calling 501-5160 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Because supplies are limited, orders received after Friday, Oct. 26 will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Orders will be available for pickup from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14 and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at the loading dock of the Human Services Building. Glover to be inducted posthumously into Babe Ruth Hall of Fame


Late Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover will be inducted into the Babe Ruth Southeast Region Hall of Fame during a ceremony Aug. 14 at RF&P Park at approximately 6:30 p.m., prior to a 14-and-under Babe Ruth World Series game. The Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association, which is hosting the World Series, made the announcement July 18. > Read more.

Rolls-Royce supplier lands in Henrico


A United Kingdom-based supplier for Rolls-Royce has established an office and manufacturing center at the Byrd Industrial Park in Eastern Henrico, the Greater Richmond Partnership announced July 18.

Erodex Ltd., a graphite products maker, recently signed a five-year agreement with Rolls-Royce to supply goods to the automotive company's Crosspointe campus in Prince George, Va. Erodex invested $2 million and hired four to quickly ramp up production for its client. > Read more.

New Walmart opens in Eastern Henrico


JULY 19, 7 A.M. – Eastern Henrico's first Walmart Supercenter opens to the public today at 5001 Nine Mile Road. The store, which occupies about 190,000 square feet and employs about 300 people, is located at the site of the former Fairfield Commons Mall, which is now known as Eastgate Town Center. > Read more.

Unattended oily rags cause fire in commercial building near Richmond Raceway


Unattended oily rags that spontaneously combusted caused an early morning two-alarm fire Tuesday in a commercial building in the 3800 block of Carolina Avenue, across from Richmond Raceway.

Henrico firefighters were called at about 5:10 to respond to reports of smoke coming from the building. Once they arrived five minutes later, they found thick smoke pushing from the rood on two sides of a warehouse whose tenant specializes in woodworking and hardwood floors. > Read more.

The crime occurred in the Carver neighborhood at the intersection of West Broad and Goshen Streets, around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. Officers were told the victim was on his motorcycle and traveling westbound on West Broad Street. > Read more.

A two-hour guided walk through of portions of Malvern Hill July 1 will kick off the Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site's “History at Sunset” series of evening guided walks and programs highlighting new park lands and lesser-known stories. The series will continue at four other local Civil War sites and Evergreen Cemetery at 7 p.m. each Saturday in July. The Malvern Hill event will allow visitors to experience one of the Civil War’s best-preserved battlefields during a two-hour walk. Park Ranger Bert Dunkerly will offer a detailed analysis of the command and decision-making strategies of Generals McClellan and Lee; visitors are invited to weigh in.
