22nd Citizens’ Fire Academy graduates

The 22nd Henrico Citizens' Fire Academy graduated twelve citizens December 7 (L to R, front row): Sharon Gainey, Kathy McAndrew, Sandy McGuire, Ruth Barrett, Nicole Mayton, Brenda Kapelewski (CFA Coordinator); back row, Chrissy Smith, Bev Newman, Cassandra Bland, Walker Bland, Sr., Dan Bryant; not pictured, Mark Bryant and Taryn Giroux). Participants attended class one night a week for 12 weeks to learn about Henrico County Division of Fire, the Office of Emergency Management and various response teams.

They also participated in fire related training and learned about prevention as well as how to be better prepared to handle emergencies. Highlights of the Academy include driving fire engines, wearing turnout gear, and learning about Emergency Medical Services and specialty teams such as hazardous materials and water search and rescue. Fire Chief Edwin Smith congratulated each graduate and encouraged all citizens to attend the Henrico Citizens’ Fire Academy, which is free of charge. Chief Smith said he looks forward to the day when Henrico Fire can say all Henrico citizens have come through the Henrico Citizens’ Fire Academy.
