Pocahontas Middle School is an energetic place this time of year! Winter sports have started and the dance team is still astounding. It performed Jan. 2 at the University of Richmond basketball game during halftime.

The wrestling team has had three scrimmages this year against St. Chris, Holman and Moody. It had its first match Dec. 5 against Brookland with Pocahontas winning. Cheerleading continues to look stunning, with the girls supporting our Hawks on and off the court. The boys’ basketball team is working hard and had a great start.

The powder-puff football game has just passed with an exhilarating outcome. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls played football while the boys performed cheers from the sidelines. The eighth grade came out on top, but everybody had a wonderful time watching, eating and talking.

The Holiday Hoopfest at Pocahontas was a big hit for the sports teams. This event was for any middle school student who wanted to play a three-on-three basketball game to raise money for new equipment.

Pocahontas’ Band and Chorus brought out their “falalas” in winter concerts. Beginning band and chorus groups had a concert Dec. 3, while Mixed Chorus had a concert on Dec. 11. Both winter concerts turned out great with all groups happy to show their holiday spirit.

FCCLA did a marvelous job collecting gently used winter items (scarves, hats, coats, mittens, and blankets) to benefit Richmond and Henrico charities.
