Attorney general’s office to handle towing-related complaints

Citizens with concerns or complaints about towing companies in Virginia should now contact the Virginia Attorney General's Office, since the Virginia Board of Towing Recovery Operators has disbanded. The transfer occurred through a government reorganization plan proposed by Gov. Bob McDonnell's Government Reform Initiative and authorized by the General Assembly last year.

Consumers who wish to obtain information about how to file a complaint with the attorney general's office against a tow truck operator can call Virginia's toll-free consumer hotline number (800) 552-9963, or (804) 786-2042 within the Richmond metro area. A complaint form and other consumer information can also be found on the attorney general's website at and clicking on "Consumer Protection" in the left-hand menu.

The licensing of tow truck drivers has transferred to the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
