School briefs - Rolfe Middle School

John Rolfe Middle School had numerous events happening in November and the first week of December.

Before students were released for Thanksgiving break, Mr. Armstrong, our principal, started a competition to support the Henrico Christmas Mother program. Almost every Middle school in Henrico County participated. The way the competition worked was whichever class brought in the most canned goods won. The competition went on for about two weeks. The school had a lot of food, but in the end, Mr. Olsen’s class of the seventh grade brought the most cans.

About a week after that, students had their Sock Hop. The Sock Hop was an event where students had a school dance for an hour. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students participated at different times of the day. All the money that was collected from the event went to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

We also had a book drive in November, when people brought in books to a box and dropped them in. Then the books were collected and given away to charities or organizations. Students also were asked to bring children’s books to school and put them in the box. If you brought books, in return you would receive homework passes. All books were donated to the Children’s Museum of Richmond.

In the beginning of December the school held its annual book fair. We had popular books, like the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series, The Loser List, The Hunger Games series and even the Harry Potter series. You name it, we probably had it!
