School briefs - Holman Middle School

November was a busy time of year at Holman Middle School. For the third year in a row, Holman hosted an author visit. This year, Donna Jo Napoli visited our school on Nov. 2. She presented a writing workshop in which students worked on their fictional writing skills, and she talked to students from around the county during a school-
wide assembly.

Holman also was excited and proud to honor our veterans at our annual Veterans’ Day assembly on Nov. 9. Students invited family members, and guest speaker Staff Sergeant Brian Fields gave an inspiring keynote presentation.

Students are currently raising money for the Henrico Christmas Mother organization by buying tickets to vote for a teacher who will dress up as a can of spam.

The third-annual powder puff game was also held on Nov. 16, and it was a great way to have fun and help the community. This flag football game is for seventh and eighth-grade girls, and all participants, as well as faculty members, had the opportunity to purchase a t-shirt, with proceeds going to the Central Virginia Food Bank.

The girls also were encouraged to bring in canned food to donate to the food bank. The eighth grade won the game once again and maintained its winning title!

Holman has had a very eventful month, and we are looking forward to the holiday season. The Husky pack is on the move!

CMoR reopens at new Short Pump site

The Children’s Museum of Richmond last week opened its new Short Pump location at Short Pump Town Center, to the delight of children who attended a sneak preview of the location July 10. The new facility, located under the forthcoming LL Bean store (formerly the food court) is 8,500 square feet in size – much larger than CMoR’s former Short Pump location at West Broad Village, which opened in 2010. The new space includes The CarMax Foundation Service Station, the Silver Diner, a grocery store, a performance stage and an art studio, as well as a giant Light Bright Wall. > Read more.

Minion mania

Spinoff is predictably silly, devoid of plot

In Minions, those jibberjabbering little corncob things from Despicable Me have finally earned their own feature film. Specifically, three of them: Kevin (tall), Stuart (plays the ukulele) and Bob (loves his teddy bear), all voiced by co-director Pierre Coffin.

After tracing the evolution of Minionkind – we don’t know what they are, but we know they’re hardwired to serve the baddest villain around – our three Minion heroes set off upon a quest to save their species and find the newest, nastiest villain overlord. > Read more.
