Henrico-based "Choose.It" recently won second place in the Tech Challenge Hanover, a state-wide competition that invited startups to compete for a chance at a $10,000 first prize and tenancy at the Dominion Resources Innovation Center in Hanover County. The company offers customers the ability to request deals they want, as opposed to receiving non-targeted offers from “deal-of-the-day” websites. Choose.It will receive a $500 co-pay for Kauffman FastTrac classes provided thru InnoVA, as well as free, ongoing consulting services from William H. Daughtrey, Dominion Resources Innovation Center’s entrepreneur-in-residence.

River Of Life Community Church in Henrico is launching a new day care service called "Tiny Steps at Lakeside" in January for preschool-aged children and their families. Rev. Fred Driscoll, assistant pastor of the church, is the day care’s director. Tiny Steps at Lakeside, located at 7700 Woodman Rd., is accepting enrollment applications for children ages six weeks through four years. Virginia Credit Union has announced a new program that will allow members to use ATMs virtually anywhere by rebating the ATM fees charged by other institutions. VACU will rebate up to $8 per month in ATM surcharges for Virginia Credit Union checking accounts that qualify. To receive surcharge rebates, members must use their debit card for the withdrawal and have a qualifying direct deposit to their checking account. VACU already provides its members up to four checking withdrawals per month at other institutions’ ATMs with no fee from VACU. VACU members also enjoy free access to the ATMs at all WAWA locations in Virginia. The program went into effect in November.

QTS (Quality Technology Services), a provider of data center facilities and managed services, recently achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification for Data Center 1 at the QTS Richmond Data Center in Sandston. The LEED Certification Review Report gave the QTS Richmond site high marks for sustainable site selection, water efficiency and optimized energy use in HVAC systems as well as systems and appliances. QTS has been retrofitting the former semiconductor plant for data center usage since the first customer installation was completed in November 2010. Since 2011, the company has recycled more than six million pounds of materials from its data centers, including copper, aluminum, steel, plastic and concrete, with the majority of those recoveries occurring in Richmond.

Author, child abuse survivor to speak at Henrico event

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.

Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.

Philippines ambassador to the US visits Filipino Festival in Henrico


The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.

While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is seeking artists, crafters, and creative groups for three opportunities allowing creative thinkers and doers to design and display imaginative holiday decorations.

The center is seeking designs for:

• Illumination 2014 – A Festival of Trees: Artists can celebrate the holiday season by creating a one-of-a-kind Christmas tree filled with decorations to suit any unique or traditional theme.
