Henrico County officials have reversed course and now will offer free curbside pickup of tree limbs and other yard debris that was left by Monday's storm. Officials had announced earlier this week that pickup would be offered for $43 per stop.

To arrange for the free service, residents must register in advance by calling (804) 501-4275. Registrations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 2 through Monday, July 9, excluding the July 4 holiday and weekend.

The Department of Public Utilities will pick up only residential yard debris, including small trees, limbs and branches, that:

• is placed curbside or along the edge of a nearby public road;

• does not exceed four inches in diameter or four feet in length;

• weighs less than 50 pounds.

Small items, including sticks, must be bundled. Root balls, trunks and logs from large trees, bagged yard debris and storm-related household waste, including scrap wood, drywall, roofing materials and spoiled food, will not be collected as part of the storm-related service.

DPU expects to complete all pickups in the coming weeks. A schedule for pickups cannot be guaranteed and will be based on the number of registrations received.

Residents may also choose to dispose of their debris for free by taking it to the public-use areas of the Springfield Road Landfill, at 10600 Fords Country Lane, or the Charles City Road Landfill, at 2075 Charles City Road. Both areas are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
