Virginia Credit Union recently awarded $2,500 college scholarships to five students from Henrico County: Melissa Gostel, a senior at the University of Mary Washington; Brittany Keup, a 2012 graduate of Deep Run High School; Austin Link, a 2012 graduate of Freeman High School; Laura O’Brien, a sophomore at Wellesley College; and Carlyn Pearce, a 2012 graduate of Deep Run High School. The scholarships were awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, an essay and work to help defray the cost of education. VACU awarded $62,500 in scholarships to 25 student members in 2012.

Draden Gaffney, a rising ninth grader entering Collegiate School this fall, has been named a 2012 Brine National All-Star. Draden has been selected to represent the Washington D.C. Regional Team Metro in the 2012 Brine National All-Star Lacrosse Academy and National Lacrosse Classic to be held in Boyds, Md. June 30 to July 3. Locally, Gaffney plays for Richmond's Team Venom U-15 Elite. He is the son of Jeff and Vicki Gaffney.

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) Educational Foundation recently selected its college scholarship recipients for the 2012–13 academic year. A $1,000 VSCPA Graduate Scholarship was awarded to Sean McCabe, of Richmond, and a student at James Madison University. A $2,500 Kearney & Company Scholarship was awarded to Courtney Dobbs, of Glen Allen, and a student at Virginia Tech. The Foundation awarded $44,000 this year to 25 accounting college students across Virginia. Scholarship applicants must be currently enrolled or have been accepted into an accounting program at a Virginia college or university. Other selection criteria for the awards include overall academic performance, entry essay, faculty recommendation(s) and community and/or extracurricular activities.

Khader M. Allahbaksh and Elsia J. Yoo, of Henrico, recently graduated from Boston University in Boston, Mass. Allahbaksh received a master of science degree in computer information systems; Yoo received a master of arts degree in medical science.

More than 20 students and instructors from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College’s Culinary Arts Program participated along with chefs from over 70 of Richmond’s finest local restaurants during Broad Appétit 2012. The students served up nearly 500 plates of coffee-braised beef on a sour pretzel baguette with an arugula salad with homemade hot sauce and a charred corn aioli. In addition, culinary students Christy Eliasek and Jamell Dickerson served as sous chefs for the entire competition. JSRCC also hosted the Chef’s Demonstration Stage. Chef Jesse Miller, program head of the culinary arts program, managed the stage, which featured the Throw Down in the Street Competition. Adjunct Faculty Member Mike Pendergrast took second place in that competition for his Pork Two-Ways dish. JSRCC has participated in Broad Appétit since its inception five years ago.

State trooper shot in Henrico cul-de-sac


SEPT. 20, 11:30 A.M. – A North Carolina woman who Virginia State Police say shot a state trooper in Henrico last night has been charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The woman, Karisa Shyanne Daniels, 23, of Durham, N.C., allegedly fired at Senior Trooper C. A. Putnam on Lakeway Court, a Henrico cul-de-sac near September Drive shortly before midnight, following a chase. > Read more.

C-SPAN bus to visit UR Sept. 27


The University of Richmond will host a multi-media C-SPAN bus Sept. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. The "50 Capitals Tour” – open to the public on – is designed to engage students and community members through interactive demonstrations of C-SPAN's multi-platform public service resources.

Free flu shots available at MedExpress, opening Sept. 20


MedExpress Urgent Care will open a new neighborhood medical center in Henrico Sept. 20 at 8040 W. Broad St. To help Richmond-area residents prepare for the upcoming flu season, the new center will offer free flu shots to patients ages four and up starting the day the center opens and while supplies last.

An open house celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held prior to opening day, Sept. 19 from noon to 2 p.m. > Read more.

Crime Stoppers’ Crime of the Week: Sept. 18, 2017


Crime Stoppers is seeking information about a shooting in Richmond that resulted in an injured child and the murder of an adult.

At approximately 10:21 p.m., Sept. 9, Richmond Police were called to the 3200 block of 5th Avenue for a report of a person shot. They quickly located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, a 57-year-old male and a 9-year-old female. > Read more.
