‘Tree Smarts’ seminar series to begin March 22-24

The Henrico County Extension Office and Henrico County Master Gardeners are set to launch "Tree Smarts," the free annual seminar series designed to increase understanding of trees, the role they play in the community's landscape and how homeowners and others can better care for them.

The series gets under way March 22-24 with "Choosing the Right Tree," a seminar about selecting appropriate trees for landscape planting. The program is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. each night at the following locations (each session will feature the same information): Tuesday, March 22, Dorey Recreation Center, 7200 Dorey Park Drive; Wednesday, March 23, Deep Run Recreation Center, 9910 Ridgefield Parkway; and Thursday, March 24, Belmont Recreation Center, 1600 Hilliard Road.

"Choosing the Right Tree" will discuss the importance of planting trees best suited to the local environment, for the health and longevity of the tree as well as the success of the landscape. The program will provide information about tree species common to Virginia and their specific cultural needs.

The Tree Smarts series is led by Henrico County Master Gardeners. Seminars are free and open to the public. Participants can register or obtain additional information by calling Henrico Extension at 501-5160.

CMoR reopens at new Short Pump site

The Children’s Museum of Richmond last week opened its new Short Pump location at Short Pump Town Center, to the delight of children who attended a sneak preview of the location July 10. The new facility, located under the forthcoming LL Bean store (formerly the food court) is 8,500 square feet in size – much larger than CMoR’s former Short Pump location at West Broad Village, which opened in 2010. The new space includes The CarMax Foundation Service Station, the Silver Diner, a grocery store, a performance stage and an art studio, as well as a giant Light Bright Wall. > Read more.

Minion mania

Spinoff is predictably silly, devoid of plot

In Minions, those jibberjabbering little corncob things from Despicable Me have finally earned their own feature film. Specifically, three of them: Kevin (tall), Stuart (plays the ukulele) and Bob (loves his teddy bear), all voiced by co-director Pierre Coffin.

After tracing the evolution of Minionkind – we don’t know what they are, but we know they’re hardwired to serve the baddest villain around – our three Minion heroes set off upon a quest to save their species and find the newest, nastiest villain overlord. > Read more.
