School Briefs – Pocahontas Middle School

Pocahontas Middle School is an exciting place bursting with energy and fun activities. We just finished another successful Duck Fundraiser. The Duck Fundraiser is an event where students are encouraged to sell magazines in order to raise money for the school. If you sell a certain amount of magazine subscriptions, you are able to go to an awesome party during ACE (study hall)! At this party you can play games, drink soda, hangout with your friends, and win money.

Also we recently had Spirit Week. During this festive seven-day period we had Tie Dye Tuesday, Wacky Tacky Wednesday and Favorite Team Thursday. On Friday we had our first marking period Pep Rally. During the Pep Rally students and teachers were involved in a series of games and “cheer offs.”

Out of sixth, seventh, and eight grade my own seventh grade came out with a victory. For our prize, the spirit flag has been placed in our hallway until the next pep rally. Our fantastic fall sport players were recognized in front of the entire school.

Those were just some of the major events that occurred during the first marking period at Pocahontas Middle School.

Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.

Weekend Top 10


The past couple of days haven’t felt like it, but it’s finally December and this weekend is packed with holiday events. Kicking the weekend off is Glorious Christmas Nights’ production of “Finding Christmas” at West End Assembly of God. Gayton Baptist Church’s annual Jazz Nativity starts tonight. Another annual favorite is tomorrow – the tree lighting at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. In search of Christmas concerts? The Virginians Barbershop Chorus will present its annual Christmas Show tomorrow at the Collegiate School and the Richmond Choral Society will perform Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Hanover Concert Band will perform their annual Christmas Pops concert at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center in Ashland. The concert is casual and will feature musical selections of the Christmas season. Complimentary light food and beverages will be provided.
