Police arrest, charge man in connection with shooting

Henrico Police arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a shooting Feb. 22 in the 2800 block of Hilliard Road that left a woman in serious but stable condition at VCU Medical Center.

Damond J. Austin was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in a felony after police responded to the residence where Austin lives with his three children and their mother. Police had received a call about a domestic dispute at the residence, and when they arrived, one of the couple's children, an 11-year-old girl, told them that Austin had shot her mother on the second floor.

The victim was found suffering from a single gunshot to the head, according to Henrico Police Lt. Eric Owens.

While officers and investigators were on scene, they observed a subject, later identified as Austin attempting to cross police tape. He was immediately taken into custody, then led investigators to the weapon.

The three children, ages 11, 6, and 1, were not physically harmed and are now in the custody of another family member.
