Rabid raccoon found in Glen Allen
|
A raccoon found dead by a dog in Glen Allen Wednesday has tested positive for rabies, Henrico Police confirmed today. The dead raccoon was found by a dog in the 5900 block of Rigney Place, near Echo Lake, at about 3 p.m. Feb. 16, and Henrico's Animal Protection Unit responded to take the raccoon's remains to the state laboratory for testing.
The test returned positive yesterday, and the owner of the exposed dog was notified. The dog was current on its rabies vaccinations and will be quarantined at its owner's home for 45 days. There were no other known exposures at this time. The Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit encourages all pet owners to verify that their pets' rabies vaccinations are current as required by State Code. Citizens should report any unusual behavior exhibited by wildlife by calling 501-5000. |
