Police seek suspect in attempted robbery

Henrico Police are seeking a male suspect who tried to rob a Family Dollar store on Nine Mile Road on Monday.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the Family Dollar in the 6000 block of Nine Mile Road, after the suspect approached the adult female clerk, displayed a knife and made demands. The suspect left the store without receiving any cash or merchandise. No injuries were reported.

The suspect (pictured) is described as a male between 5-foot-7 and 6 feet tall, weighing between 160 and 190 pounds. He was wearing a mask, grey gloves, a black hooded shirt, blue pants and white tennis shoes. > Read more.

Henrico neighborhoods to celebrate National Night Out

The Henrico County Police Division and neighborhoods throughout Henrico County will celebrate the 31st annual National Night Out (NNO) Aug. 5.

Chief Douglas A. Middleton and his staff, as well as Henrico Police Officers and many county officials, will visit more than 70 neighborhoods throughout Henrico County to strengthen police-citizens partnerships. Middleton will start by visiting the Richmond International Raceway NNO event at 5 p.m. Then, until about 9:30 PM, the night will be alive with cookouts, block parties, ice-cream socials, parades, and other fun events taking place throughout the county. Homeowners in neighborhoods that do not have events scheduled may show their support by putting on porch lights. > Read more.

New hotline to serve domestic, sexual abuse victims

A new hotline will serve victims of domestic and sexual abuse in the greater Richmond region, thanks to a $50,000 donation from the Jenkins Foundation to the YWCA of Richmond.

The Greater Richmond Regional Hotline – (804) 612-6126 – is the newest program to result from the Regional Collaborative, a group of five domestic and sexual violence service providers including the YWCA of Richmond, Hanover Safe Place, Safe Harbor, The James House and Project Hope at Quin Rivers. > Read more.

The Henrico Division of Police will promote nine officials in a ceremony Aug. 6 at the Henrico County Training Center.

The following members will be promoted:

• Lieutenant L. N. Toney, promoted to the rank of captain.

Saxon Shoes assists YMCA’s ‘Bright Beginnings’ program

In its 22nd year, YMCA Bright Beginnings will take local children from low-income families on back-to-school shopping trips in the next few weeks. Starting Monday, July 28, 2014 about 200 of these kids will receive new shoes from Saxon Shoes as part of this program.

“We started working with Bright Beginnings about 7 years ago and we love it. The children come in so excited for their fitting and walk out all smiles with a new pair of shoes for back to school” said Amanda Weiner, Special Projects Coordinator for Saxon. > Read more.

Bojangles to host ‘Stuff the Bus’ school supply drive

Sixty Bojangles' restaurants in Virginia and North Carolina will host a “Stuff the Bus” drive on Saturday, Aug. 9.

The drive is designed to help public school children in need of school supplies by collecting pencils, paper and other necessary items – along with the backpacks to hold them. > Read more.

M Bistro and Wine Bar closing Feb. 1

A Rocketts Landing restaurant is closing its doors Feb. 1.

M Bistro and Wine Bar announced by e-mail last night that it would close after three years in business.

"The friendships, business partnerships and relationships we have developed over the past few years make this a very difficult letter to write," Chef Michael Hall wrote. "Please know that it was a very difficult decision for us to make as our lease period comes to an end. We wholeheartedly thank all of our families, friends, wonderful staff, investors, neighbors and the Richmond community at large for a wonderful experience. We would especially like to thank Rocketts Landing for welcoming us to their neighborhood with warmth and open arms.

Deep Run Roadhouse offers creative comfort food

I was simultaneously relieved and excited when I walked into Deep Run Roadhouse on Gayton Road; I knew it was another restaurant venture by Paul Hubbard of Alamo BBQ in Church HIll, but I hadn’t considered that the menu items would be, to my delight, much of the same.

Fifteen years ago, Hubbard, a graduate of Godwin High School and longtime Henrico native, dreamed of opening a restaurant honoring his hometown park – Deep Run Park on Ridgefield Parkway. What he didn’t know was that barbecue was to be on the menu. > Read more.
