Lakeside girl to compete at MLB All-Star Game event

A Lakeside girl won her age bracket in the qualifying round of the Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run competition at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. last month and is headed to the MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati to compete for the national championship in her division.

Kayla Stephens (above) won the 7-8 year-old division for girls at the event. All 30 MLB teams hosted similar events for boys and girls in four age divisions: 7-8 ,9-10, 11-12 and 13-14.

No one injured during fiery morning wreck on I-295

UPDATE: JUNE 30, 12:02 P.M. – No one was injured during a fiery two-tractor trailer accident on Interstate 295 North near the Pocahontas Parkway in Varina this morning.

Henrico Fire units responded to the scene near mile marker 25 on I-295 North at 8:19 a.m. and found both tractor trailers off the road and down an embankment, with one on fire.

Va. Guard soldiers, airmen eligible for Va. Veterans ID card

A new Virginia law takes effect July 1 making Virginia National Guard Soldiers and Airmen eligible for the Virginia Veterans Identification Card, and the first applicants for the card will be recognized at a ceremony at 10 a.m. July 1, 2015, at the Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility in Sandston.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia National Guard and Virginia Department of Veterans Services will conduct the ceremony, and a DMV 2 Go mobile customer service center will be on site to process the applications and remain afterwards to perform other transactions. Applicants will receive their Veterans ID Card in the mail from DMV's secure card issuance facility in about five days. > Read more.

Steward student wins national science award


Steward School eighth-grader Gracie Goodpasture recently was honored by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) with the 2015 Angela Award, presented annually to one female student in grades 5-8 from the United States who has a strong connection to science.

The award and a $1,000 savings bond were presented to Goodpasture by NSTA President Dr. Juliana Texley at an award ceremony held at The Steward School.

In the Angela Award application, Goodpsature was required to detail her interests in science. She described her experience working with Perdue Farms on a third-grade class project, which led her to become interested in chickens. She put together innovative ideas about raising them at home and worked with Jim Perdue, chairman of Perdue Farms, who has remained her mentor and wrote a recommendation for her NSTA application. > Read more.

Henrico students attend FCCLA leadership conference


Students from Brookland Middle School's chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently participated in a weekend leadership training conference in Virginia Beach. Attendees participated in a weekend of workshops and sessions about leadership through FCCLA. Along with nearly 1,200 other advisers and members, Brookland Middle School’s FCCLA chapter advisers, Amanda Lauritzen and Cherise Cobb, accompanied eight members to the conference April 17-19. Brookland Middle School was one of four schools from Henrico County that attended the conference and the only middle school. > Read more.

‘Project Plant It!’ visits Glen Allen ES


Glen Allen Elementary School third-graders enjoyed an interactive "Tree Trivia" assembly hosted April 21 by Dominion Resources and Power UP!, an entertainment company that partners with Dominion’s Project Plant It! program to teach students about trees and the environment.

Ranger Spruce Sassafras led students in a game-show style competition during which teams teams tested their knowledge of tree trivia.

More than 44,000 elementary students in six states, including elementary students in Henrico County Public Schools and other school systems throughout metro Richmond, are participating in Project Plant It! this spring. > Read more.

‘Proof of Heaven’ coming to Glen Allen


Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.

Alexander (pictured, at right, while Unity of Bon Air church member Harry Simmons interviews him) has written about what he considers to be his journey through the afterlife.

Tickets to this month's event are $25 and will support the new Bon Secours Hospice House being built later this year. > Read more.

Innsbrook Rotary celebrates 25 years


The Innsbrook Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 25th year in 2015, has completed a number of volunteer projects this year and raised thousands of dollars for various organizations through three events.

The club's annual rose sale, benefit for youth live auction and Virginia Fire Games competition, combined with individual and corporate donations, have raised nearly $70,000 – money that the club contributes back to the community.

FeedMore is the beneficiary of the club's 25th anniversary project, which provides refrigerated trailers to be used for the distribution of food throughout Central Virginia. > Read more.

Chef Bryan Voltaggio will host a special three-course dinner event July 21-22 at his Willow Lawn Family Meal restaurant. The menu will consist of his favorite dishes and offer diners the chance to purchase a signed copy of his newly released book, HOME.
